Chinese Cupping

You may have been asked, “What are those marks on your back? “  These circles are becoming increasingly common as more people are taking advantage of the benefits of Chinese cupping.

Offered as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with acupuncture and tui-na massage, Chinese cupping helps remove stagnation within the muscles and fascia.

Glass or plastic cups manipulate the muscles like a deep tissue massage reducing tension, knots and scar tissue. They also draw out toxins, including lactic acid, found within the body. Contemporary methods such as orthopaedic sports medical cupping may also be used for muscular-skeletal issues while movable cupping stimulates the lymphatic system. This lymphatic drainage boosts the immune system, improves the functioning of the autonomic nervous system and helps to decrease edema.

When glass cups are used it is referred to as ‘fire cupping’.  I generally use this method for systemic concerns while the silicon and plastic cups for muscular and pain issues.

Temporary red marks may be left from the treatment depending on the amount of stagnation and toxins within the body.  The lymphatic and vesicular system will circulate to help clear these within a few days. In rare occasions these may last up to 7 days but with more cupping the less marking remain.

Benefits:

Systemic level: Cupping improves circulation of blood and lymph. It also regulates and improves the functioning of the autonomic nervous system.

Locally: Pain relief, relaxation and increased mobility of stiff tendons and muscles. There’s an increased secretion of synovial fluid and blood flow into the joint cavity when the cups are applied to the area.

Digestive System: With gentle cup manipulation on the abdominal area following various protocols cupping may increase digestive secretions.   With that movement and stimulation it can strengthen the stomach and digestion, improving bile flow and even helping constipation.

Detoxification: By increasing the flow of blood and plasma through the veins and arteries, cupping enhances the cleansing and removal of toxins which help detox the skin and circulatory system.

Examples of People Who May Benefit:
